Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit. However, Jesus becomes one in our suffering with his passion and death so that through our suffering we can participate in his saving and healing work.

​

Jesus is the one who has come to save all. Christ means “anointed.” God the Father has given Jesus a mission and endowed him with power to save and the power to heal. Jesus' whole life was aimed at saving people. His words and actions are the foundation of the saving grace we receive in the sacraments.

​

Anointing of the Sick is when people receive forgiveness for their sins and comfort in their suffering. They are restored in spirit, and sometimes, they even experience the return of physical health. The sacrament also reminds us that God wants to give comfort to the suffering and wants us to relieve suffering where we can.

​

In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the priest anoints the seriously ill, injured, or the elderly with the oil of the sick. The oil of the sick is a special oil used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It is blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week.

​

Anointing of the Sick, sometimes occurs in a church and is given to the sick or elderly in a community setting. It often takes place in homes, nursing homes, and hospitals. The sacrament may be received more than once, such as when a sick person's condition worsens.

​

In the Rites of the Anointing of the Sick, the priest anoints the sick person on the forehead, saying, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” He also anoints the sick person on the hands, saying, “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen.” The “raising” refers to spiritual healing, as well as any physical healing that may take place.

Who receives the anointing?

 

The Letter of James states that the sick are to be anointed in order to raise them up and save them. Great care and concern should be taken to see that those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age receive this sacrament.

 

• Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present.

• Sick children may be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by this sacrament.

• The sacrament of anointing may be conferred upon sick people who, although they have lost consciousness or the use of reason, would, as Christian believers, probably have asked for it were they in control of their faculties.

• The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or if during the same illness the person’s condition becomes more serious.

El aceite de los enfermos es un aceite especial utilizado para el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. Es bendecido por el obispo en la Misa del Crisma durante la Semana Santa.

La unción de los enfermos, a veces ocurre en una iglesia y se da a los enfermos o ancianos en un entorno comunitario. A menudo se lleva a cabo en hogares, hogares de ancianos y hospitales. El sacramento se puede recibir más de una vez, como cuando la condición de una persona enferma empeora.

¿Quién recibe la unción?

• Las personas mayores pueden ser ungidas si se han debilitado notablemente aunque no haya una enfermedad grave.

• Los niños enfermos pueden ser ungidos si tienen un uso suficiente de la razón para ser fortalecidos por este sacramento.

• El sacramento de la unción puede ser conferido a personas enfermas que, aunque hayan perdido la conciencia o el uso de la razón, como los creyentes cristianos probablemente lo habrían pedido si estuvieran en control de sus facultades.

• La Santa Cena puede repetirse si la persona enferma se recupera después de ser ungida y luego vuelve a enfermarse o si durante la misma enfermedad la condición de la persona se vuelve más grave.
